How it works
The names are the 500 most common for each recorded sex among babies born in the United States from 2016 to 2025, from the Social Security Administration's public data. A name that is common for both appears once, with the split shown. The list never changes, so a link made today still works next year.
You and your partner swipe through the same names, most popular first, each on your own phone. Liking a name sets one bit in a string of about a thousand; the page doesn't remember anything about you except those bits.
When you want to compare, press "Send my likes". That makes a link containing your bits, compressed to a few hundred characters, which you send however you like. Your partner opens it (or pastes it into the Compare tab) and sees the names that are in both sets. The page shows only shared names, but the link can be decoded, so send it only to your partner. Nothing is sent to us. Filters and your last name stay on your phone.
Questions people ask
- How do we see only the names we both liked?
- Each of you swipes through the same list of names on your own phone. Then each of you makes a link with your likes and sends it to the other, and the page shows the names that are in both. Nothing goes to a server.
- Can my partner see the names I passed on?
- The page shows only names you both liked. The link itself holds your likes and passes in a compact form, so someone who decodes it could read them: send it only to your partner. A fully hidden comparison would need three link trades and heavier code, so we haven't built it.
- Where do the names come from?
- From the U.S. Social Security Administration's baby-names data, which is public domain (CC0). The list is the 500 most common names for each recorded sex among babies born from 2016 to 2025, about 960 names in all. They are US names, and spelling variants count as different names.
- Do we both need an account or an app?
- No. Open the page in a browser, swipe, and trade links. If a link opens inside a chat app, copy it and paste it into the Compare tab.
- Can I add a name that isn't in the list?
- Not yet. The likes are stored as a bit per name over a fixed list so they fit in a short link, and a name outside the list has no bit. The list is frozen so old links keep working.
