How it works
Add what you bought, its return window and the day the window starts: the day you bought it, or the day it arrived if you ordered online, which is how Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Apple count. The last day is the start plus the window, so a 30-day window from October 4 ends November 3, the same way UK law counts its 14 days. If the store shows a return-by date, type that instead; the store's date always wins.
Receipts sit on the spike with the soonest last day on top. "Remind me" adds that day to your calendar with an alert two days before, time to pack it and get to a drop-off (our rule of thumb). When you send something back, the stub tears off and the receipt waits for its refund. Amazon says processing can take up to 30 days, so after 30 days the list tells you the refund is late and what the law says you can do. When the money arrives, it's stamped and filed.
There are no store presets, because windows change with the item, your membership and the season. Everything stays in this browser on this device.
Questions people ask
- How do I work out the last day to return something?
- Add the return window to the day it starts: with a 30-day window that starts on October 4, the last day is November 3. Online orders usually count from delivery (Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Apple all say so). If the store shows a return-by date on your order or receipt, use that date.
- Do stores extend return windows for the holidays?
- Some do, and the dates change from year to year. Walmart's policy says most items bought from October 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31. Check the store's current policy, and type its return-by date here if it gives one.
- How long does a refund take after I send something back?
- It depends on the store and how you paid. Amazon says it can take up to 30 days to receive and process a return, then 3 to 5 business days to reach a credit card or up to 10 for a debit card. In the UK, a seller must refund within 14 days of getting the goods back after you cancel an online order. This list flags a refund that hasn't arrived 30 days after you sent it.
- Do I have a legal right to return things I bought?
- In the EU and the UK, most online purchases come with 14 days to cancel, counted from delivery. In the US there's no general right to return; it's the store's policy, though California requires a store that doesn't give refunds or exchanges within 7 days to post that policy.
- Where is my list kept?
- Only in this browser on this device; we never see it. Use Settings to export a copy or move it to another device.
