Row counter for knitting and crochet

Keep your place in a pattern: the row, where you are in the repeat, and what to do on this row.

  1. Row 1, you are here
  2. Row 2, ahead
  3. Row 3, ahead
  4. Row 4, ahead
  5. Row 5, ahead

How it works

The big pad means "I have finished this row": tap it and the number moves to the next row. The ribbon beside the number shows the rows you have done, the one you are on, and the next six, with the pattern's reminders hung on the rows where they apply. A repeat counter ("Cable: row 3 of 8, 4 repeats done") isn't a second counter you must keep in step: it is worked out from the row, so it rolls over by itself, and Back a row and Undo move it too.

For shaping, enter the row, the gap and the number of times. "Dec at each end of next and 3 foll 4th rows" with the next row being row 1 is row 1, every 4 rows, 4 times: rows 1, 5, 9 and 13. The page doesn't read pattern text; it does the arithmetic you enter, and adds a chime if you want one.

Projects are kept in this browser on this device, with the row each was left on. The screen stays on for up to 30 minutes after your last tap, and the pad is the only thing that counts, so a brush against the screen won't change your row.

Questions people ask

How do you count rows in knitting?
Count the V's up from the bottom of the fabric, not counting the row still on the needle. A KnittingHelp answer: "Count the v's up from the bottom," and don't count "the row on the needles because it has yet to be knitted." Then set the counter to that row with Go to row.
What does "dec at each end of next and 3 foll 4th rows" mean?
Decrease on the next row and on each of the next 3 fourth rows: rows 1, 5, 9 and 13 if the next row is row 1. A forum answer to exactly that instruction: "You should dec on rows 1,5,9,and 13." Add a reminder on row 1, every 4 rows, 4 times, and the counter shows each one coming.
What do dec, inc, rep, RS and WS mean?
Decrease, increase, repeat, right side and wrong side, in the Craft Yarn Council's standard abbreviations, where "rep" is "repeat" and brackets mean "work instructions within brackets as many times as directed."
How does the repeat counter work?
Tell it how many rows are in the repeat (say 8) and which row it starts on. It shows "row 3 of 8" and counts finished repeats by itself, because both come from the row number: the Next row, Back a row and Undo buttons move it with the row.
Will the screen stay on while I knit?
Yes, if "Keep the screen on while you knit" is on and your browser supports the Screen Wake Lock API, which "provides a way to prevent devices from dimming or locking the screen when an application needs to keep running." The page lets it sleep 30 minutes after your last tap.
